Approaching the start of this season, Brighton looked light in midfield. James Milner had retired, Carlos Baleba was on the cusp of joining Manchester United, and Chema Andres had not yet joined the club from Stuttgart.
Those fears were eased on the opening weekend of the campaign when the tried and tested trio of Jack Hinshelwood, Pascal Gross and Yasin Ayari ran riot against Aston Villa.
However, an injury to Hinshelwood that has ruled him out for up to six weeks soon reopened the conversation over depth in that department.
Brighton had already been scouring the market for versatile midfielders who could be deployed in several different roles, with then-Freiburg playmaker Johan Manzambi and Bayer Leverkusen’s Malik Tillman among those on their radar.
