An unusual atmosphere engulfed the Amex Stadium on 24 May. Brighton bowed out of the 2025/26 campaign in toothless fashion after being comfortably beaten 3-0 by Manchester United to end their hopes of playing Champions League football.
In the minutes that followed, all eyes were therefore on what was going on elsewhere, specifically at Anfield. So, when Brentford’s Dango Ouattara headed over the bar from close range in the last minute, forcing the Bees to settle for a point against Liverpool, it all became clear: Brighton were back in Europe.
On the pitch, there were scenes of jubilation. Lewis Dunk was smashing balls into the crowd, Georginio Rutter was dancing with teammates. In the stands, Albion fans had quickly forgotten the 90 minutes of prior disappointment and were dreaming of away days to Greece and the Czech Republic, which have since been booked.
