The transfer window slammed shut yesterday, and it was a summer which saw Brighton bring in six new faces and let go of 22 players, may that be on a permanent basis or on loan. But arguably the best bit of business the Seagulls managed was retaining the services of star players such as Kaoru Mitoma, Carlos Baleba and Jan Paul Van Hecke, who were all linked with big moves away from the south coast.

However, there is another important player which Fabian Hurzeler's side managed to keep hold of: Danny Welbeck.

According to The Athletic, Manchester United explored the conditions of re-signing their former star as part of Ruben Amorim's attacking rebuild. The Red Devils are said to have considered offering the 34-year-old a contract until 2027 to lure him back to Old Trafford after 11 years away.
