Roberto De Zerbi has opened up on why he decided to leave Brighton by mutual consent in 2024.
The Italian opted to part ways with the Seagulls halfway through his four-year contract with the club, one season after steering them to a European finish (6th) after replacing Chelsea-bound Graham Potter a matter of weeks into the 2022/23 campaign.
De Zerbi then guided Brighton to the knockout stages of the Europa League before securing an 11th-place finish in the Premier League, in what was an injury-ridden season on the Sussex coast.
The former Shakhtar Donetsk boss never shied away from discussing what he felt was holding him back in what was ultimately proved to be his final season with Brighton: squad strength. Following the sales of Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo in the summer of 2023 – with Leandro Trossard also leaving six months prior - De Zerbi hoped to build a deeper squad to push on with.
