Matt O’Riley has certainly endured a rollercoaster of a season so far. As he aptly put it, it’s been ‘a lot, but not a lot at the same time’.
After an injury-hit 2024/25 debut campaign at the Amex Stadium, a goal, an assist and a starring role as a No. 10 promised plenty from the Brighton playmaker in pre-season.
Cast your mind back to the opening weekend of the campaign, and there were clear signs that he could live up to those expectations when he tucked home a penalty against Fulham to open the Seagulls’ Premier League account for the season.
But after a quiet display against Everton, it seemed only a matter of moments later that O’Riley was at the Stade Velodrome donning an Olympique Marseille kit and, coincidentally, stood alongside ex-Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi.
