Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has heaped praise on Seagulls defender Jan Paul Van Hecke ahead of their upcoming match against Manchester United. The German spoke of the Dutchman’s leadership this season and sent a clear message on his ongoing contract situation.

Van Hecke was last season’s Player and Fan’s Player of the Season, and despite strong interest from Tottenham and Newcastle, the Albion managed to retain his services this summer.

However, the centre-back’s current contract expires in the summer of 2027, and it is said to be unlikely that he will sign a new deal, which would see him able to leave as a free agent at the end of next season, or even on a cut-price deal beforehand with the Seagulls’ hand being forced.
