Brighton’s new signing Diego Coppola recently made his Italian senior-team debut at centre-back, and he has already been told that he is capable of battling it out with the best in the business. The former Hellas Verona defender was tasked with keeping one of the world’s greatest strikers at bay, Norwegian forward Erling Haaland.

Prior to the UEFA World Cup Qualifier, ex-Italy manager Luciano Spalletti spoke highly of the Serie A starlet in what will be music to the ears of Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler.

He said: “The lad is professional, determined to become a great player, he has several clubs already eyeing him up. He is tall and might look like someone who is just good in the air, but he is also good at covering distance.
