Brighton’s winning run was brought to an abrupt end by Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, slipping to a 3-1 defeat on Tyneside.

The Magpies, who headed into the contest on the back of five defeats, raced into an early lead when William Osula nodded into an empty net after Bart Verbruggen came charging off his line but failed to prevent Jacob Murphy from delivering his cross.

Dan Burn then doubled Newcastle’s lead against his former side in the 24th minute, steering his header into the far corner under minimal pressure.

Eddie Howe’s side had a host of other chances to put the game to bed before the break, and the under-fire Englishman may have been fearing the worst when Jack Hinshelwood smashed his strike beyond Nick Pope after 61 minutes to hand the Seagulls a lifeline.
