Brighton were knocked out on penalties by Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Seagulls took the lead in the shootout after Jason Steele kicked away Mateo Kovacic’s effort, but two poor penalties from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk saw Enzo Maresca’s side book their place in the quarter-finals.

Brighton had led twice in normal time, too.

Malick Yalcouye opened the scoring after 30 minutes, tapping home from close range following Georginio Rutter’s drilled cross. Kovacic then equalised 10 minutes later, whipping his strike into the far corner from outside the penalty area.
