A brace from Danny Welbeck proved enough as Brighton battled to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
After a slow start from both teams, the veteran striker broke the deadlock in emphatic fashion in the 41st minute. In a rare moment of composure in the first half, Georginio Rutter slipped a neat pass through the heart of the Magpies’ defence before Welbeck dinked his forward over the onrushing Nick Pope.
Brighton pushed to double their lead after the half-time break, but their vulnerability at the back continues to be a conundrum for Fabian Hurzeler to solve. Nick Woltemade continued his electric start to the season to draw the Magpies level in the 76th with a smart backheel into the far corner.
