Brighton were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Arsenal on Wednesday evening in a disappointing blow to Tony Bloom’s hopes of his side earning their first piece of silverware.

The Seagulls made a fast start at the Emirates Stadium, with Georginio Rutter, Stefanos Tzimas and Jan Paul van Hecke missing big chances to open the scoring. Brighton were soon made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal though.

Ethan Nwaneri swept home a smart strike to give the Gunners the lead after 57 minutes following an excellent passing move involving Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Bukayo Saka then came off the bench to book Arsenal’s spot in the quarter-final in the 76th minute when smashing a strike into an empty net after the ball was parried into his path.
