Big name and big money signings are a common occurrence on the south coast nowadays, with well-known and high-profile players coming in for fees of £20million, £30million, or even £40million.
But not everything went to play on this day 14 years ago when Brighton thought they had bagged a ‘big name’ Dutch forward, which saw the name ‘Bergkamp’ printed on an Albion shirt.
The Seagulls had just sealed promotion to the Championship and manager Gus Poyet was looking to add more quality to his squad. They wanted a striker, and July 1, 2011, they announced the arrival of Roland Bergkamp from Excelsior.
