Brighton star once rejected big-money Russia move months before his contract was cancelled

The playmaker opted against a lucrative contract in Russia to put pen to paper with Brighton.

Words are useful as they keep records of history that could easily dissolve into the abyss. Some footballers would love for that to happen. Nzuzi Toko is probably more grateful for the records, however, otherwise his somewhat mythical stint with the Seagulls in 2014 would have most likely been forgotten. 

Toko arrived on the south coast eleven years to the day after spending six years with Grasshopper Club Zurich. It was an optimistic signing for Brighton, who convinced the midfielder to snub a number of top-quality sides to acquire his services, including a sumptuous contract offer from Spartak Moscow as well as other clubs including Augsburg, Hannover, Hellas Verona and even initial interest from the Premier League’s ever-present Everton.
