Brighton were unable to spoil the party for Everton during their opening match at a raucous Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of David Moyes’ side.
Makeshift right-back James Garner proved the unlikely hero for the hosts as he doubled the Toffees’ lead in the 52nd minute to see off the Seagulls and mark the historic occasion with a victory.
While Brighton had an abundance of opportunities to level the score in the first half, with the woodwork denying both Kaoru Mitoma and Jan Paul van Hecke, it was Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye who opened the scoring from a Jack Grealish cross in the 23rd minute.
