Antoine Semenyo bagged what proved to be the all-important goal for the Cherries from the penalty spot in the 61st minute after a catalogue of errors ultimately saw Jan Paul van Hecke bring down Evanilson.

Andoni Iraola’s side had stormed into an early lead after 18 minutes when Alex Scott was afforded time and space to swivel on the edge of the Brighton penalty area and fire a fierce strike beyond Bart Verbruggen.

But following a sub-par first-half, the Seagulls burst into life after the restart and Kaoru Mitoma continued his great scoring record against Bournemouth with a header from close range, but Fabian Hurzeler’s side were unable to capitalise on their momentum and paid the price for a mistake-ridden display.
