Brighton Under-21s’ late comeback falls short after three stunners in seven-goal EFL Trophy thriller against Gillingham

Shannon Ruth’s Under-21s suffered their first defeat in the EFL Trophy after giving themselves a mountain to climb early in the tie.

Brighton Under-21s attempted a late comeback against high-flying Gillingham, but it was too little, too late, and Shannon Ruth’s side suffered a 4-3 defeat and their first loss in the EFL Trophy.

The Seagulls started the game with the majority of possession, but they found themselves behind in an unfortunate moment when Ben Barclay picked up the ball in the box, not realising goalkeeper Steven Hall had already taken the goal kick.

The Gills wasted no time capitalising on the opportunity, with Tom Eaves firing his penalty into the top right corner.

The hosts doubled their lead seven minutes later through Bradley Dack after a well-placed pass over the top was beautifully controlled and laid off by defender Andy Smith.
